System Group Skills Bootcamp in HGV Driving launched with visit from Nadhim Zahawi MP
The Secretary of State for Education, Nadhim Zahawi, visited System Group learners and skills coaches in London yesterday after the logistics training provider secured a further £5m in Government funding to expand the Skills Bootcamp programme.
Skills Bootcamps are free for learners and support the unemployed, those seeking a career change, as well as employed people looking to upskill and secure more responsibility with their current employer.
The intensive, short courses in HGV driving are part of wider aid to build up employment and skills in areas of high demand as the country continues to battle a big shortage of delivery professionals.
Learners are guaranteed a fast-tracked interview with a local employer after completing the Skills Bootcamp, supporting the national effort to increase the volume of HGV drivers across all parts of the economy.
At least 2,000 people had registered their interest so far via the National Career Service and Jobcentres before the first course got underway yesterday at Croydon in South London.
Derrick Mensah was one of the first learners beginning his Skills Bootcamp on site yesterday. He had been working as a taxi driver in Central London before deciding to pursue a career in HGV driving after seeing the well-publicized shortage, saying:
HGV driving was something I had always wanted to pursue but wasn’t sure how to go about looking for training or funding to get the right license.
I saw the Skills Bootcamp advertised online and felt it was the perfect opportunity for me to start my career as an HGV driver with the help of government funding. I’m looking forward to enhancing my current driving skillset so that I can move onto a larger vehicle and learn more about driving HGVs as a full-time career.
After completing my course I’m hoping to continue working in London. With my past as a taxi driver, I’m used to working throughout the night so I’m hoping to adapt to my new role quickly and successfully.
I’m very excited to pursue one of my long-time aspirations – the future is bright!
Another learner was referred to the Skills Bootcamp by his local Job Centre after being made redundant from his bus driving role. Speaking to System Group Skills Coaches yesterday he said:
It’s a great way to get back into structured learning which will help me with securing permanent, full-time work but will also help with the national lorry driver shortage.
I’m looking forward to getting my practical test completed so that I can get back onto the road as quickly as possible. I love driving and can’t wait to make it my career once again.
Skills Bootcamps form part of the government’s drive to support more adults to get a better job and gain skills for life. They offer free courses of up to 16 weeks, giving people the opportunity to build up sector-specific skills, including digital, construction and green skills and a fast-track to an interview with a local employer.
System Group CEO, Paul Hudson, said:
System Group are delighted to support the national effort to increase the volume of HGV drivers across all parts of the economy.
The Skills Bootcamp for HGV Drivers is a great opportunity for those people who are looking for a new career, to develop new skills and with the opportunity to work with excellent employers.
New figures published today show that more than half (54%) of the 2,210 adults who completed Skills Bootcamps between September 2020 and March 2021 went on to achieve a successful outcome, such as securing a new job, an apprenticeship, a new role or increased responsibilities with their current employer or, for the self-employed, access to new opportunities.
