Curating a Culture - What Leadership Training Can Do For Your Business
A powerful way to support your employees, improve their capabilities and inspire their teams is to provide leadership training.
Even for the most senior of staff, additional qualifications and new skills are highly beneficial in creating leaders who can drive performance, cultivate a people-first culture of engagement and strengthen your company’s core values and policies.
Many people have the misconception that apprenticeships are low-level qualifications, designed to meet the needs of school leavers and those just starting on the career ladder. However, there are apprenticeship levels which are equivalent to bachelor’s and even master’s degrees. Unlike normal university study, apprenticeships can be completed while continuing to work full-time in your current role by forming part of additional employee training.
What makes a great leader?
2020 was clearly a difficult time for many businesses across the UK and as the economy slowly begins to recover from the impact of the pandemic, we can start to analyse and report on how the changes truly affected our working professional lives.
A report by ILM found that nearly three quarters of employees surveyed (73%) believe that some part of their company’s leadership has been lacking during the pandemic. The research, which surveyed over 3,500 UK professionals on their experiences of management and leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, found that leaders and managers are most likely to fall short on softer skills, such as empowering and motivating teams (36%), and empathy and emotional intelligence (31%) – potentially impacting workforce motivation and ultimately, performance.
The research has found that senior management levels lacked leadership the most during the COVID-19 pandemic, with respondents to a recent survey identified people management, communication, and interpersonal skills as the areas in which their leaders needed to develop further.
While it is likely that the external pressures of the pandemic contributed to the gaps in key skills and behaviours, it is also true that these gaps will have been present prior to the impact of COVID-19.
How can businesses foster great leaders?
Leadership training typically encourages managers and leaders to tackle the shortfall in soft skills and helps to guide all managers towards higher-level success. Many of the key skills needed to be a successful motivator can not be taught overnight. Through investing in training, senior leaders are given the time needed to develop their soft skills and leadership style while on the job.
In April 2021, System Group launched the Management Development Academy at Poundland. The apprenticeship is designed for employees who work within management roles and want to develop their knowledge and skill to a higher level and now ranks within the top 10 most popular apprenticeships undertaken in the UK.
Some of the key areas within the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the programme will include managing people, developing relationships, organisational performance, delivering results, personal effectiveness, managing self, taking responsibility and professionalism.
In 1976, Edward T Hall developed the "Iceberg Model of Culture" – where he explains that organizational culture is like an iceberg found in polar seas. In an iceberg, nearly 10% of the iceberg is visible above the water surface, while most of the iceberg is hidden below the waterline.
By combining industry specific curriculum knowledge, vocational training in soft skills and workplace experience and achievements – a leadership qualification is a fantastic way to provide employees with the tools to continue within their organisation as successful leaders.
If your company is looking to invest in the future of senior management, System Group can develop a training academy combining our years of transport & logistics expertise with your company cultures and values.
