The logistics sector came together for just the second time today at the supply chain advisory group at the IfA (Institute for Apprenticeships) in Coventry. They had one mission; to shape and debate the future career pathways for the logistics sector.
David Cormack, Strategic Partnerships Director, was there representing System Group and providing the perspective of the sector’s training providers. Representatives from rail, maritime ports, and road logistics were supported by IOC for Express, RHA for LGV, FTA for warehouse and storage and the Institute of Export representing air. The meeting, attended by some of the UK’s most prominent names including Royal Mail, DHL, Kuehne & Nagel, Nestle and more, spoke about the public perception of the sector and how to fit the whole supply chain into an occupation map.
The discussions were wide reaching with many opportunities for detailed and in depth conversations about how best to achieve this goal. Paul Stone from Uniserve spoke about industry silos and gaps in the existing standards and highlighted a number of important voids in the provision available at Level 3 and Level 4. He used a SCOR map and supply chain references to outline the full purchase to delivery of supply chain, followed by a discussion on occupations within the chain.

Pierre de Carteret, Kiejos: “Not every stream has vertical routes: we have to talk wider than apprenticeships. Is it about technical skills? Supply chain is very diverse: it may be madness to map supply chain in its entirety.”

Kuehne & Nagel: “Every organisation needs knowledge of the business: it must not be too generic.”
Martin Keaves, IFA: “Having more Standards is not always the answer: any form of career mapping for the occupation routes would be greatly welcomed. Give us your expertise to identify occupations in supply chain.”
Soryah Brown, IFA, Relationship Manager for transport logistics: “Can I encourage a single map for the supply chain sector.”
The event unanimously concluded that ‘We need a career map for supply chain’.
David Cormack of System Group continued, “This is an exciting first step to shape the career path for next generation workforce for the logistics sector, and we’re delighted to be part of it, working in partnership with employers and other organisations across the sector to make this a reality”.
The group is aiming to create a first draft of the sector career map at the next meeting, and will initially meet every two months to maintain momentum on what is a key subject for the sector to address.
