Department of Education Have Approved the Trailblazer Level 2 Standard for Express Delivery
The new Apprenticeship Trailblazers are a fantastic initiative that will ensure that apprenticeships have more real world significance as they are written by the industry for the industry. Employers from across the relevant industries collaborated to produce qualifications and delivery that will ensure that new apprentices are the best trained and most fully equipped for their roles and their industry. The Express Delivery Trailblazer will introduce apprentices to the heady world of final mile delivery and set them firmly on the path to their new careers and the Level 2 Standard has now been approved by the Department of Education.
The Level 2 Trailblazer in Express Delivery was developed by the employer group chaired by Justin Moore, of Citysprint, and secretaried by the Institute of Couriers from the phase two application.
IOC president, Lord Falkland, states that “This is a solution to the next generation workforce in final mile and we should be proud of the dedication of employers in the sector who have given time, expertise and energy to reach this goal for our sector.”
Carl Lomas, IOC Chair, comments, “This is a milestone of success for the employer group - a team effort of every letter of the alphabet in our sector, APC to Yodel. It’s more than twenty years since the first NVQs in transport were introduced and now the Level 2 Express Trailblazer is cleared to go so the next generation workforce will be funded to enter our sector. The standard was developed by employers for employers and the qualification is funded under the Levy, or 90% fees supported to SMEs, and free to the candidates. It’s time to engage.”
The excitement over this development is shared by training providers. Dave Dargan, CEO of System Group Limited, agrees that "the Trailblazers are a fantastic development for the industry as they’re tailored so closely to the industry's needs and developed by employers. As the customers' needs have changed, the industry has had to change with it and the Express Trailblazer is a perfect example of the industry's response to those changes. The explosion in popularity of online shopping, the increasing demand for next day, or even same day, home deliveries, and the focus on efficient, safe, and responsive customer service has meant that those coming into the industry need to be highly trained and highly engaged.”
The new standard will be delivered as a one year, comprehensive programme. Pearson Edexcel have developed the end point assessment EPA, including a multiple choice knowledge test, a practical simulation and viva interview, and a professional discussion, which together provide a robust process to ensure a consistent outcome.
Dave Dargan concluded, “The Express Trailblazer comprehensively covers the knowledge, understanding, skills and behaviours that will guide an Apprentice into the industry and support them through the challenges and adventures that express delivery offers. We are looking forward to being part of the Apprentices' journey into this exciting and ever expanding industry.”
