System Group, Transport for London, the DWP and the Department for Education were at the Institute of Couriers Heads of Industry fellows round table event on 18th October 2016. It was a full house, sharing best practice and putting the industry’s issues to the table.
The event opened with a transport style bacon butty lunch where like-minded teams could network, focussing on key express issues. IOC Chair, Carl Lomas MBE, opened with introductions - City Sprint, Hermes, DPD, GLH, Diamond, Gnewt, DHL, GSG, Rush, Swift, UK Mail and more introduced themselves as Lomas urged attendees to talk about key and imminent issues.
The event covered many topics around the future of the industry and the next generation workforce. Always looking to the future and the vital role it plays in breaking down the barriers that the industry faces in relation to that future workforce, System Group were happy to take the lead in some of those discussions and David Cormack, representing the company, spoke passionately about the amazing trailblazer apprenticeships.
“The Trailblazer Apprenticeships in Express and Logistics are a perfect solution for the sector, employer led, and driven by you,” David explained. “The ground-breaking new standards have been approved and are ready to make a difference and develop the next generation work force for the sector”.
When the Apprenticeship Levy comes into affect from May 2017, organisations with a PAYE bill exceeding 3 million pounds will have a pot of money available only to spend on apprenticeships. Organisations who will not be paying the levy will benefit from substantial subsidies that similarly are to be used only for apprenticeship training. David affirmed that the combination of the apprenticeship levy and new trailblazer apprenticeships will create an amazing opportunity for the logistics sector, as this dynamic combination, if fully adopted in the right way, could bring a sea-change in the way the next generation for our sector is created. He concluded, “This is a silent revolution in funding and not to be missed.”
David Cormack and others from the team at System Group were available during the event to offer advice and guidance to those who wanted to capitalise on these industry leading advancements.
