New drivers who have passed their vocational driving test after September 10th, 2008 (bus/coaches) or September 10th, 2009 (LGVs/HGVs) must now take two more parts to their test, in addition to the licence acquisition theory and practical test.
Prior to taking the practical test, candidates must now undertake the Driver CPC Module 2 Case Study, and after they have passed the practical test they must also complete the Driver CPC Module 4 Practical Demonstration before they can drive for hire or reward.
Once drivers have passed their test they will also need to complete periodic training to maintain their Driver CPC qualification.
Drivers who passed before this date hold acquired rights until 10th September 2014, provided they complete 35 hours of Periodic Training before this date.
Periodic Training is Continuing Professional Development for bus, coach and lorry drivers. It carries on throughout the professional driver's career, and is designed to be relevant to the drivers everyday job, complementing their work.
The Driver CPC qualification requires drivers to complete a minimum of five days driver training in a five year period for as long as they are driving professionally.
Only Approved Centres or Consortiums can deliver approved Driver CPC training courses that will count towards a drivers' 35 hours Driver CPC Qualification. It is the responsibility of the training centre to update training records on to the DSA database which determines when DCPC Qualification cards can sent out.
