Driving Goods Vehicle Apprenticeship

Introduction

The Driving Goods Vehicle (DGV) Apprenticeship is for young people aged 16-24 interested in a career driving lorries over 7.5 tonnes, transporting and delivering goods between suppliers and customers.

Learning Outcomes

The DGV Apprenticeship provides candidates with the skills required to drive a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) alongside Skills for Life such as Maths and English that will assist them in everyday life.

Course Structure

The DGV Apprenticeship covers basic skills to prepare apprentices for employment including employment law, health and safety, equality and diversity and Skills for Life* subjects covering Maths, English and ICT which are embedded into the course.

Following this apprentices learn the skills required to drive a LGV including driving, theory, hazard perception, Driver CPC, controls, manoeuvring, road craft, loading and unloading, checking the vehicle, legislation and dealing with customers to earn an NVQ in DGV and obtain a Technical Certificate in Road Freight Logistics.

Assessments

Apprentices will undergo a series of assessments based on the licenses they work towards, including:

  • NVQ in Driving Goods Vehicles Level 2 (Level 3 for Advanced Apprenticeship)
  • Driving Theory and Hazard Perception
  • Technical Certificate in Road Freight Logistics
  • Driver CPC Module 2 (case study), Module 3 (practical test), Module 4 (practical demonstration)
  • Skills for Life Level 1 & 2*

Certification

All apprentices will obtain an NVQ Level 2 in Driving Goods Vehicles, a Technical Certificate in Road Freight Logistics, Skills for Life Level 1 & 2* and a category C driving licence.Advanced Apprentices can go on to obtain the NVQ Level 3 in Driving Goods Vehicles and the category C+E Artic Licence.*Exemption for Apprentices with equivalent A-C grades in Maths and English.
